You’ve probably heard of exfoliation but what exactly is it and how often should you be doing it? Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from your body in order to provide healthier, newer skin cells. There are two ways this can be done: physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. 

  • Physical exfoliation: when you use scrubs, loofahs or brushes to remove dead skin cells
  • Chemical exfoliation: when you use products that contain chemicals and enzymes aimed to slough off dead skin cells

Which type of exfoliation is best for me?

This depends on several factors such as your skin’s needs and concerns. 

If you struggle with acne and oily skin, then you should do chemical exfoliation, particularly one product that contains Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA).BHA reduces acne, blackheads, whiteheads and also contains anti-inflammatory properties so it isn’t too harsh on the skin.

If you have sensitive skin, chemical exfoliation is fine, however, look for something that has enzyme exfoliants such as papain which comes from papaya or bromelain which comes from pineapple. Enzyme exfoliants are very gentle on the skin so they are great for sensitive skin. 

If you have concerns such as fine lines, uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation, then an exfoliant that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) would benefit you. AHAs dissolve dead skin cells, improve texture, and promote collagen production by working on the skin’s surface. 

Physical exfoliation can also be effective, however, if you have sensitive or acne prone skin, its best to avoid it because it can irritate skin if not done properly. To properly use a physical exfoliant like a scrub or a brush, be very gentle and apply light pressure when exfoliating.   

How often should I exfoliate? 

The answer to this question depends on your skin type, whether it’s normal, dry, oily, or combination. 

  • Dry skin:  Exfoliation once a week or twice at the most should be enough as you don’t want to dry your skin out any further
  • Oily skin: 2-3 times is recommended to help excess oil production and help clogged pores
  • Normal skin & combination skin: 1-2 times a week

For sensitive skin, you should start by exfoliating once a week and see how your skin reacts. Make sure to use a gentle exfoliator.
